As an important platform for dialogue and exchange in the global shipping industry, the 2024 World Shipping Conference once again collaborates with "Hong Kong Shipping Week" to inject new vitality and momentum into the global shipping industry to gain insights into changes and build an ecosystem. The conference invited about 1,500 authoritative figures and leaders from global shipping, ports, trade, logistics, financial institutions, and industry regulatory agencies to attend the event.
The World Shipping Conference has been held in Hong Kong for three consecutive sessions since 2021. As one of the important activities of "Hong Kong Shipping Week", the scale of the 2024 World Shipping Conference is even more grand than last year, and its driving and boosting effect on "Hong Kong Shipping Week" is becoming evident. This year's conference, themed "Crossing Cycles, Integrating Towards New", focuses on the latest policies, hotspots, and trends in the shipping industry, inviting guests to discuss the new opportunities and challenges faced by the shipping industry under the major changes in global trade and transportation.
At the conference, National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference Vice Chairman Leung Chun-ying, Acting Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Chan Kwok-kee, Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong SAR Zheng Yanxiong, Vice Minister of Transport Fu Xuyin, Secretary for Transport and Logistics of the Hong Kong SAR Government Lam Sai-hung, and Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization Arsenio Dominguez delivered speeches.
The guests at the main forum delivered keynote speeches based on the current state and development trends of the industry. The conference's roundtable forum discussed "Sustainable Shipping Supply Chain in the New Era".
At the conference, the "Digital Intelligence Carbon Reduction" consortium was officially established. The consortium aims to further leverage the World Shipping Conference as a high-end platform for the global shipping industry, unite various units to deepen multi-party cooperation, promote industry carbon reduction, drive industry progress, and accelerate the transformation of technological innovation achievements into industrial applications, achieving data advantages, business opportunities, decision-making advantages, and strategic leadership advantages in the future development of the shipping industry.
With the support of six major classification societies and six top academic institutions, as well as the Hong Kong Shipowners Association, the World Shipping Conference released the ESG evaluation standards for shipping companies for the first time, utilizing cutting-edge large model technologies such as Shipping GPT to provide clear ESG advancement paths for shipping enterprises, and to create a set of forward-looking, comprehensive, objective, and intelligent ESG performance evaluation tools for investors, regulatory agencies, and related entities, promoting the shipping industry to steadily move towards a green, low-carbon, and sustainable direction.
It is reported that the 2024 World Shipping Conference will also hold eight thematic forums on November 19, focusing on the forefront directions and development trends in areas such as oil, bulk gas shipping markets, legal insurance, and shipping finance, to facilitate detailed discussions and build a higher-end, more professional, and more efficient public communication platform for all ends of the industrial chain.
The 2024 World Shipping Conference is led by China Merchants Group, jointly organized with the Transport and Logistics Bureau of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, the Baltic and International Maritime Council (BIMCO), the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), and the Hong Kong Shipowners Association (HKSOA), with China Merchants Energy Transportation Co., Ltd. specifically undertaking the event. In addition to the on-site conference, the conference will achieve global real-time broadcasting through the shipping conference platform and APP.
